Sometimes when I have a favorite author, I keep a book or series of theirs in my back pocket, unread for a rainy day. For a time when I need to fall in love with the written word all over again. The Worth saga is one of my rainy day series.

Courtney Milan is my all-time favorite author. If I were reading her paperbacks, the pages would be dog-eared (yes- I am one of those evil people), the margins scribbled with thoughts. As it is, if my Kindle e-reader could say, “Really, this one… again?” it would. Without exception, each one overflows with witty banter, poignant emotional revelations, and unforgettable characters.

Within the first two pages of this book, I knew it would live in my heart long after the last page was turned.

like all of Courtney Milan’s books, it’s a cleverly constructed mixture of romance, history, and insight regarding social injustice. Henry is this cheerful, clearly adhd, English lord/soldier who, although he was born into privilege, never lived up to the image and expectations set by his father (because of both his homosexuality and his uniquely neurodiverse mind) His own self-worth is a reflection of his father’s opinions… the words he has heard his entire life. Insults and criticisms that most of us with ADHD have heard with the same frequency as the words “bless you, and will you pass me the salt.”

John is a black x-slave for the American colonies in the Revolutionary War, who meets Henry in battle. Through their time together traveling back to his hometown, these two men, who have lived very opposite lives and experiences gain an understanding of the plights of the other.
